Nothing happens to the previous classes level, the time invested isn't wasted..
Sega restricted the number of 'bodys' you could make to one (Dont ask why) but to compensate, they allowed one 'body' to be any class and change at will.. for example, i've played force a little bit, then i changed back to hunter, but my forces levels remain intact:

EDIT: Subclasses are coming in the October update, huzzah!
The biggest example is picking force as your subclass (techer included?) if your a ranger or hunter you get to cast techs.. finally :/
