I seem to remember this scenario a while ago on Episodes I & II when loads of people tried connecting but the Ship Selection screen never appeared. Caused mass problems, many posts here! lol
The reason for this, i think there was a server problem that Sonic Team found unexpectedly. If it's still not working now, then that maybe the reason. I doubt it's a fault at your end unless its a connection problem which i shudda imagined would only happen one small time in a year or so! Keep trying really!
