Well. Whenever that happens, leave the GC alone for 5 minutes. It might just be a slow connection. Just leave it. The worst thing that can happen if you do this, is that you will get a timer disconnection. If you aren't disconnected safely, then pull the modem plug from the GC. This should give you an instant DC and you can save normally.
If that doesn't work then there isn't much you can do. Try opening the lid or pressing the reset button.
Some people say deleting your guild card file can work, some people say it doesn't. So try that. So you'll have to get everyone's guild card again, but you might save your chars. If they aren't that important then just let the game clear them and start again.
