Well i haven't played Animal Crossing (Dam Nintendo of Europe), but i sure have played a lotta Harvest Moon!
Simply what it looks like, you....farm!
You earn money by either growing fruit/vegetables on your farm, selling milk from your cows, eggs from your chickens, wool from your sheep, etc. You also raise your animals, you buy them as you have the money, plus you getta free horse you can use to gallop around Forget-me-not valley!
Also you find and start chatting up one of 3 girlies around the valley, and by the end of the first year, you will have a wife and a baby to take care of (Whether you want one or not! lol). Apparently the baby also eventually helps you out on the farm, but a while away yet!
I haven't played it for a while cos of college, but i was around Summer of year 2 and there are 40 years to go through!! Took me weeks/months to get past the first year! Lots of playability, always something else to do. A bit like the sims of farming games!
