Well if it's one of the first PS2s made, it could be defective like a lot of the early ones were. They worked for about a month and then broke down easily. Another thing is the DVDs you have might not be the right Region for the PS2 DVD player. Region depends on where you live in the world. Then it might just be getting old and need to be repaired. If it's just that, call Sony and ship it to them and they'll fix it for around $25.
