Did you try normal RJ45 rather than 'crossover' and turning your modem off at the socket and then back on again?
Apaprt from that im out of ideas.. a router is the easiest way to go (reltively) but its also the most expensive. Id recommend upgrading to XP too as ME isnt worth the effort, especially when you want to do anything like this.
If you use the net regularly then id recommend sticking with broadband. 56k modems are just too old and slow.
