Well, when you first create a character, the mag is the same colour as the costume you have. If you chose one of the costumes at the end that do not have a colour (ie special costumes) then you will get a random coloured mag.
That mag is now stuck with that colour for it's life. Whenever you raise it a level or new evolution, the new mags colour will still be the same colour. There is no way to change the colour, apart from raising a totally new mag with the colour you want.
Every mag changes its colour to the same colour as the previous mag. But they all vary on how much colour shows through. For example, the Nidra rare mag is a red colour. You can only tell the original mags colour from the tiny sting on the tip of it's tail. With Sato, all of the body is the same colour. Bana, the little ball of light changes colour.
I don't have a rati or sato so I can't help you there. Maybe someone else can illuminate you
