Let's see...
Handguns: Cool. Except if you're not a Ranger you'll be impatiently waiting until you can use the next type (my FOnewm and HUcast had this problem until they could use their Varistas). I haven't found many gun rares though... except for Varistas. I'm hoping I get a Ruby Bullet "some day" (as in, when I can get to Vol Opt V2 with someone who can get it).
Rifles: If you can find one that's better than your handgun, yay. I didn't use rifles for the longest time once I got my first Varista, because it has the same ATP as a Laser (ungrinded; and I used 15 grinds on it before passing it to the FOnewm). These are cool for busting boxes from afar or for taking cheap shots from the doorways.
My RAmar carries a Wals at the moment - something else, maybe, when my RAmarl/Greenill starts finding rares...
Shots: Didn't like them originally, but they aren't bad when they have good specials (I once got a King's Arms which was cool).
Mechs: Judgment is correct... a good pair is awesome. Like Twin Psychoguns. Hit is not required... unless you're a Force or something, in which case you really have no business using mechguns anyway (unless you have a deathwish).
Launchers: Hey... it's never bad to carry a weapon twice as big as you are.
