Sort of. I experimented with HUmars before actually buying PSO... one still exists as a Lv. 13 temp character on my main memory card. But my first "official" character is my RAmar... I started with a Ranger for two reasons. (1) I loosely based it on an RP character I created on another forum having nothing to do directly with PSO... and (2) I really hate to miss. A HUmar was my second character... and both are doing about the same amount of damage now, because the HUmar is about 10-15 levels lower. I have the unfortunate habit of meleeing way too much with my Ranger though... partly because I have a Delsaber combo... and partly because another thing I hate to do is do less damage than I could be doing. But hey, I like the gun variety.
