multiplayer offline ultimate

a problem i had as well, U have to beat very hard above level 60 or 80 with the chars, to unlock ultimate for multiplayer. I had ultimate way before my friend did, he got to ultimate at like level 59 or 69 something like that. But we werent able to play it on multi. Told him to redo very hard, he was like level 89 then, once he beat it we were able to play ultimate together.
