On the gamecube when you choose to play multiplayer it asks each player to select their character individually. So after you import one character, that data is temporarily transferred to the main memory card. So if you're playing three or four players then you just swap memory cards whenever a different person needs to import their character. Once you're done playing the game asks you to insert the corresponding memory card for each character to be exported and re-saved with whatever levels were gained or weapons were found during multiplayer play.
