I've used my credit card details using various sites, eBay, PayPal, amazon, and several smaller sites. I've never had one problem. Installing a firewall and anivirus on your computer will stop most of the bad things you hear about. The actual sending of data is probably more secure than your computer. A hacker finds it hard to intercept and decode data. I guess it's easier for them to hack YOUR computer and access any data you choose to save on your computer. The safest thing to do is not store any cookies on your computer, or use AutoFill in IE. Or save any documents that contain your credit card info. It amazes me that people actually do that.
