Well, if you say "whenever you please..." not really. You could walk to the G-colony hq, and change there, but that's about it. It's quite flexible. And no, Wartecher is more weighted toward techs, it's nice being able to wade into a crowd, throw down S&D, and then spam tornado break etc.
You can really play that class how you want, it's a good one. ^_^
When I was a newman on it, I played it as mostly melee, and it worked great, but I also went Wartecher on my cast for a bit, and he was almost exclusively a caster.
Apologies for the terrible pun.

PSO is slightly better than PSU, in my oppinion. This post over at PSO-P is exactly how I feel about PSU
Busta Wrote:NOTICE: This is my opinion on the matter. If you disagree, then feel free. I'd put this in the rants board, but seeing that its directly tied to PSU and the discussion of PSU, I'll post it here.
When I first heard news about PSU I was excited. The idea that we would be getting a game similar to PSO, but with much more improvements seemed awesome. From the previews that I read, it sounded like our battle system would become more complex with much more possible combos and strategy involved. Is that the case now that it has been released? NOPE. Instead you mindlessly MASH one button, you don't even have to time your attacks anymore. You get no combos whatsoever... no Normal, Hard or even Special Attack. Your only attack is the "Mash Attack". Then they throw in the Photon Arts which seem totally cool until you realize its just a flashy attack, which again you basically just spam. So in reality, the battle system is LESS complex than PSO and gets old REALLY quick.
Then there is the concept of NEW BOSS battles of epic proportions. Give me a break. For one, the name of the "first" boss is De Ragon. How dumb is that? Is that supposed to be a funny play on words? Secondly, he is basically the exact same boss from PSO. He walks around, breaths fire almost in the same manner. Then he flies up, shoots fireballs, and then comes back down and does the same thing all over again. Granted he looks cool and the graphics for PSU are nice, but who cares in the long run? Gameplay is always more important than Gfx.
The mission system is total CRAP and a terrible idea. Why you might ask? If one person in your party dies, it screws everyone in the entire group. Have fun finding a PUG (Pick Up Group) and then have some noob die because he doesn't feel the need to heal himself. JOY!
Soloing in PSU brings an entirely new meaning to "Please someone stab me in the eyes with a fork, because I am so bored". Not only is battle system boring, but the time it takes when soloing clumped up with the need to always conserve PP makes for a really JOYOUS occasion.
The PP idea seemed like a dumb idea to me from the start, and it really is. Rather than be a "refreshing, new addition", its costly and irritating.
Then comes my most hated part of PSU. Character customization. Don't get me wrong, the physical look and the character creation are nice... but there really is no TRUE character customization. Your stats at level 10 will be basically the exact same as every single other level 10 of the same race and class. The slot items you can buy make a very small difference, and since there are no longer MAGs or Materials to alter stats... you're stuck in an extremely linear level growth. So basically, I can be running with another Beast Hunter similar level and we will be doing near-identical damage.... but our CLOTHES will look different!!! WOW.
Nothing like playing a game where there is no strategy element, just pure button mashing and decent, highly repetitive visuals. http://ev.dhs.org/PSOp/viewtopic.php?t=4276
Personally I'm incredibly disapointed with PSU and would rather pick up PSO again over it any day.

I prefer PSO. Fighting in PSU just seems alot more dull to me and since thats what you spend most the time doing i find the game quite dull ;o;. The only things i like better about PSU are the graphics and different costumes and character appearance.
Ill play every now and then i guess but i usaly get bored a few mins into the game and quit for a few days.

Well to each their own. It's all a matter of opinion anyways, some like some things better than others...
...and the knowledge of cat costumes may or may not cause a bias to my opinion... =>.>= =<.<= XD
My beast plays so much like my HUnewearl that it is very enjoyable. XD Except now I can fight even better. XD
But eh... I don't feel like making a big long post... soo.... *click*

I honestly find the combat in PSU to be a lot more entertaining than PSO... Try running some S rank missions online and tell me you can just mash one button and win. I'm constantly changing attack patterns, and just because I have Combo 3's availble to me doesn't mean I have to use them each time - I find challenge and take price in managing my PP in my weapons to where they're not all dry at the end of the run, yet I still manage to have a very high damage output.
For example, tonight in the new S rank De Ragnus mission which came out today, the Jumping Beans from RELICS (the hopping things, Golormos or something?)... How I handle those, is I strafe around, lure them into an attack, make them miss, then dart forward to where they will spring back, use combo 1 of Buten Shuren-Zan (dagger) to knock them down, hit normal attack either once or twice for some light damage, then strafe and back off to try to get it to bounce back and line up next to another Golormo, so I can end up hitting two at once with Buten, knocking both down and doing 4 hits to each, then get them in a lock. Combo 2 would just knock them away, and I don't want those enemies getting away from me. All sorts of melee tactics for different types of enemies.
One thing that I've noticed about people who complain about PSU is that they usually only stay in ONE area, running the SAME mission over and over again. Why would you do that? To level up the most efficiently? What ever happened to playing a game for fun, to have fun? GAME? lol, I am at a loss, I don' tknow, I guess it's fine that people play just to be uber, but the whole point of playing just for that purpose is lost on me. I'd much rather experience all the game has to offer, personally.
I think the combat is excellent and exciting in PSU... much better than PSO on Dreamcast (the only one I played), while that combat was addictive, I find that PSU's combat offers more room for personal touch to be added to it... like knocking something down with a 3-hit normal combo with an Axe, then finding another target really quick while switching weapons to Single Saber and Rising strike it away from you, then switching back to the axe and PA'ing the original target down again. The game is what you make of it, really, I guess is what I'm trying to say. *shrug*

I say...all of you get a job so you can play both and we all get long.
Both games do indeed have their ups and downs. There are deffinatly thing's I wish would've stayed in PSU, and a couple things I wish weren't there. For one the world and transfer system confused the hell outta me the first time I got on. I don't like how you have a limit of photon arts, and I deffinatly miss that number key shortcut section across the bottom that was on blue burst...it deffinatly scares me at the thought of making a force on PSU. The graphics are absolutley amazing...but I think compared to everything else it was worked on way more than anything else...which may sound good at first...but really isn't. Because the battle system...although I think it got an amazing improvement, it needs a couple little tweaks to it...we can only hope for it to not be in the next PS game.
The last thing I miss in PSU are those F***ing chairs man!!!
No chair races!
No more dignified sitting!
Rawr.
Nonetheless, I love both BB and PSU to death.

This statement makes no sense!
So, attack-attack-attack-ow-ow-die is less dull than attack, sidestep, attack-attack-attack, cause pain, sidestep, stepback?
I dunno, people can be so weird sometimes. More options get added and somehow these options make things more boring?

I actually have one thing i don't like about PSU.
The online story is a complete cop-out. My character isn't the main character like they claimed, he just happens to be a silent figure in the background who occasionally beats the living snot out of the Vol Brothers.

I kinda like that. I mean, that way I can focus on and develop the conspiracy theories, without having words put in my character's mouth.
Also, when you technically owe your training to someone, I guess it's considered good manners to go on missions with them.

PSO is better. I played PSO not knowing what it was about and was hooked on it for about 5 or 6 years.
I played PSU with barely any knowledge of what it would be like (Dont like spoilers too much) and played it for 5 or 6 weeks. Just didnt guage my attention like PSO did. Therefore I sold it and cancelled my GL. Sorry, PSU just didnt do it for me.
