Right when I saw this title, the following popped into my head:
- there are rules (everyone else got that)
- not everyone's on at the same time
- it's much more organized
- people are more likely (but not gaurunteed) to atleast try to use grammar and spelling
- the conversations have some sort of topic
- there's alot less instantaneous replying (which I think is good, on a chat room, 4 or 5 people say things at once and by the time you type something, you're reffering to what someone said 50 posts ago)
So: forums != fancy chatroom

Whatsmore, there generally aren't so-called moderators on chatrooms. Someone say something offensive? They'll be sorry. Although I must admit IRC's community deals with this quite well.

Agree with whiteninja. Forums are more structed (unless some people make them go off-topic... *mumble*...

). Chat is real time and is more free-ranging on topics. There are less rules for chat as well. It can go off-topic and not be shouted at

Forums aren't even close to what a chat room is. A forum is slower, usually more civilized, more controlled, and can actually possess a "community" whereas a chat room is just for yacking back and forth and any moron can wander in and get booted and banned just as fast as they got there.

Who said "Yes" (on the poll) a forum is like a chatroom? We've already stated several reasons why they're different, and no one has stated anything otherwise.
Another thing: Forums can have cool doo-dahs like the signatures and mags, or customed titles. (that I still don't have.....)

I voted kind of because they have a similar purpose, to talk to each other; but, there is the real time aspect and many other factors. I didn't want to say no or yes though because the topic could be interpreted in many different ways.

Kireek, was that post really necessary?
But yeah, forums are much different. When I think of chatrooms the first thing I think of is desperate nerds trying to 'score'. Sorry if I offended someone who actually goes on those things, but it's just what pops into my head.
Forums, on the other hand, are a good place to form friendships, and have a proper conversation about anything you like, not (as other people have said) just loads of people talking at once about nothing.
So in conclusion, a forum is NOT a chatroom.

Lol! I'll have to remember that next time I'm on IRC, although I'm sure my girlfriend would have something to say about it!
