Looking for drop charts (Skyly)
#21
hm. In my mathematics lessons I was always taught to identify a recurring chain of numbers and round as soon as the numbers began to repeat themselves. If, for example, a drop rate was 1/7, or 0.142857142857 et cetera, I'd chop it down to 0.142857. That's the only time I'd deliberately avoid chains of forty-digit exponential decimals...

You are digressing.

Are you saying that you find 1/21 is more misleading than 4.762%? I still don't see how it can be Confused

Simple. 1/21 implies if only vaguely) that one might find a rare item with this particular drop rate once in every 21 appearances of the enemy that drops it... Naturally I won't believe that for a second.
However to the untrained eye, or to the eye of the unaware, this may be the case.
I'm just saying that I think a percentage may well clear up any imperfections.
And on the 4.762% thing, I see it as something like 4.76190%. Notice the 0 is preserved, if only to avoid upper- and lower-bound confusion.
Everything happens for a reason.

I quote myself:

"A percentage is 2%. (That gives me a 1 in 50 chance.)

I have 50 identical cups upside-down, and only one has a ball underneath. My chance of finding the ball from just one guess is 2%.

I didn't guess right. (This is the equivalent of not getting a rare.)

I try again, but with a new set of 50 cups. Therefore, I still have a 2% chance.

I can try as many times as I want with new sets of 50 cups, but the chance of finding the ball will always stay as 2%, no matter how many times I guess.

Remember, the game does not remember how many times you've not got a rare."

Back to topic: On my site I'm doing a Ultimate mode rare finder, it's almost finished except a couple of ID's. If you get an error message or something wrong, that'll be the problem. It's at the bottom of this page:

I never said one WOULD find an item within 21 tries. Neither did I say that the game remembers the number of times one has or hasn't got a rare...

I was quoting myself in light of it being on the subject of which you were discussing.

However, that subject isn't on-topic, so, I refer once again to this

But you do say that 1/21 implies you will get it from 21 enemies, but in percent form it does not.

I still don't see how putting it as a percent brings a sense of realism in. The percent and fraction both represent the same thing after all, so in a sense, both are as misleading in my opinion.

Unless we are talking about complete idiots, in which case, feel free to make some different drop charts to cater for such an important crowd Tongue

Omar, you have just given me an idea of such brilliance that I might just listen to you for once...

It's worth noting that a lot of people on PSO ARE complete idiots (about 45% - not implying that anyone on the site is an idiot of course), so as you seem to think that I am saying that percentages make it easier for idiots (which I did not intend to imply directly and explicitly, but for the purposes of this it can be assumed to be so) I will immediately set to work on converting heyf00l's fractions ino the percentages that I personally feel a lot more comfortable with...

Who knows, perhaps I might even post them on the boards??
