Router decision?
#1
As some of you may have noticed me mentioning, a router is the last thing I need to buy before getting online (my BBA and Keyboard Adapter should be arriving next week). Unfortunately, this is proving more difficult than I thought. First of all, I have seen prices ranging from $25 to $300. Second and more importantly, there's almost no way to hardwire this, as the router and cube will be on different floors entirely. Thus, I'll be needing a wireless router.

For the purposes of PSO, how reliable is a wirelss router? I know someone who owned a LinkSys wireless router before going off to his college (where everything is hardwired), and he claims it never gave him any problems. I asked the opinion of an online friend who seemed to know about routers, but he claimed that "any router that isn't complete crap would be pricey." So now I don't know what to believe.

I was hoping someone here who has a reliable (and hopefully not TOO expensive) wireless router could point me in the direction of its website. Thanks.

Off Topic: how would you connect a wireless router to the gamecube anyway?

On Topic: I've heard that linksy wireless routers work fine

I have no clue how to connect them actually, but this guy who told me about his old LinkSys did in fact go online, quite often in fact (he got corrupted at one point, lost 2 of his 4 characters and cancelled his account shortly after...). I'm assuming I can figure out the connections and such when I get the thing, but if not there are probably guides lurking around here. At this point I just need, (a) assurance that LinkSys wireless routers are decent, reliable, etc. (I don't want to go finding awesome rares online only to lose connection a second later thanks to an unreliable router), and (b) the prices. See, it's not my decision which router to buy, and I'd have better luck influencing a decision if it's cheaper.

If your reciever is a USB device (From the wireless Modem/Router), then i'd suggest a USB to Ethernet adapter and then plug an ethernet cable into your Gamecubes BBA as you normally would. Thats no guarantee that'd work though. Im unable to try it myself!

Yeah, that was the other thing: I'm seeing different "types" of connections as well... PCI Card, PC Card, USB Adapter, and "Gaming Adapter" (listed in order of price). Which ones would NOT work at all?

Hardwired routers are really, really NOT an option for me, okay? I'm not in a position to be drilling holes in my house's floor, because I don't own the house. Also, this router is supposed to reach across the entire house, as well as between floors. It's impossible; I need a wireless router, it's the only way. Does anyone here use a LinkSys Wireless router?

here's how i hook mine up: I run an ethernet (rj-45) cable from my cable modem to my wired router, i run 2 more cords from my router to my laptop and my Gamecube.

we use a cisco wireless, it covers the whole house fine (my dad goes out in the garden with the lptopp in the summer and it works Tongue) not sure of the price, but it can recieve 2 different ways- on laptops we have a true mobile 1150 series, but that wouldnt go into a cube, in the back of the computer theres an arial that you can probably plug into a GC too, i asked my dad and he said yes, so if i ever get a BBA i can get online easily enough (no drilling for us lol) and for the router we have a cisco 800 series. its reliable, and not toooo expensive (i think its less than £150)
