FFXII isn't supposed to be online (thankgoodness). But i've read that Square is totally changing the old style fighting system.

"Final Fantasy XII does away with the awkward, yet ancient, role-playing conventions of random battles and jarring transitions between exploration and combat. Instead, in Final Fantasy XII, you'll never get taken out of the core gameplay experience, except when the game shows you a cinematic cutscene or when you access your status menus"-Gamespot

Although FFXII looks crazy awesome, I'm still not sure I'm gonna like all the changes they've made, and I probably wont know for my self until I'm holding that PS2 control getting ready to embark on my quest through another of the great FF's.

Final Fantasy XII is going to be made by the development team that made FF tactics & tactics advance. The game itself is going to be an offline adventure but if there's going to be any online additions is still unknown. I know that the story is suppose to take place in Invalice (the same place as tactics & tactics advance).
