what would be the best way to discribe episode 1,2 or 3 to someone who has never played or even heard of the series..casue I mentioned it to a friend,when she asked more about it,I didn't know how to answer without sounding like a rabid fanboy...^^"

Well there's actually some really long storyline that starts with the Phantasy Star series a long time ago.... So use Google to find a summary of the storyline and then condense it so it doesn't sound like such a cult game.
Or you could just invite them over to play. (get them hooked, show them this site)
