Not really

Maybe if you join the inner sanctum that is my MSN and survive (I have to cut people from my list who I don't speak to often. Gets pretty big list :p), then maybe you'll know.

Yes. If you just play 50Hz, you can only play one server, and only with EU players. You need to play on 60Hz servers to play with the world.
Hold B when the game starts and a screen selection should appear. You can select what display mode to play with.
Ive never had to press B and I've been able to go to EU US and JP all along? Is that normal?

This might be because you have RGB channels, right?
Then it'll automatically adjust to 60 Hz.

Yeah thats fine, its just that your TV or whatever you use is all ready set to 60Hz, most games made by NINTENDO or that have been published by them have always got a 60Hz function. All you need to do is hold B from when you see the Purple Cube constructing and you should get the display of what mode you would like to set your GC to.

Ivan, it's because your US. US and JP use the NTSC video format for TV and consoles. That's one reason why companies take longer to release games here, so they say

. NTSC is only 60Hz+, so you don't need to select an option when the game starts, it's automatic. I think however, PAL is a better format. Double the vertical number of lines I think, so better quality ^ ^v
EDIT: Gone off topic enough. Don't want to break our own rules now do we

?
