Its an ethernet cable that allows direct communication between two machines, its about a fiver and you can get them from pc world / maplins etc. If you wanna know how to connect everything up or how it works have a look through this forum, theres quite a few posts about broadband ics & networking.
You might find this usefull too: http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/live/start/connect/sharedpc/

I am not sure. But I guess that the cross over cable is just some of ethernet cable. But there are two sorts of ethernet cable, cross over and normal. I ain't sure which it will be.

How are you trying to set it up again? Just Xbox on its own? Through a router/switch/hub, or through Internet Connection Sharing. Either way, to get the information you are looking for:
This works for win98SE, not sure about the other versions. 1) Goto START, then RUN 2) Type "winipcfg" (without quotes) 3) Click MORE INFO 4) From the drop-down menu, find the adapter you use to connect to the net, it should be pretty obvious.

hehehe np. I had so many problems getting my GC online the game PSO GC came out. I got it a day early (thank you Gameplay!) and tried to connect but couldn't. I took the day off uni trying to get it to work. I phoned Infrogrammes and they said the servers weren't up yet! DOH! So I waited very patiently for a day and then tried again. Couldn't, so I rang NTL and asked them what to do. They said it couldn't be done. I rang them up a few hours later and told them it could be done
