Well then he'll need to get a new PSP alot sooner than you. So be happy, you're saving yourself a bunch of money.
Button mashing is just what people do when they are inexperienced and to nervous while doing vs. mode to actually think anything through.
Too legit to quit.

Until I train with someone in a fighting game, I basically do random combos. Worked disturbingly well in Soul Calibur 2. Learned how to do that move with Astaroth where he spins his axe around and if you get hit by the first swing you get stuck to it and he hurls you across the stage. Good to learn a decent move by random for once.
Of course... I don't BASH the buttons... I just hit random ones in what I call "common fighting game combos".

Its called cheesing...
I use Rpahael in SC2 and people say i cheese with his forwrd and Y attack... (on GC)
Button bashing works and on games like Tekken 2 it was the only way to beat people like Kazuya...
It may be annoying but remember... at the first sign of an opening, button bash them back... (or on SC2 just do kick rallies to thier face)
Potential return to glory with PSO2?

Only thing about Soul Calibur 2 is, it's pathetically easy to block every attack.

Okay... besides Raphael being a queer... I've fought him more than enough to block 99% of his attacks... and grab breaking is easy too, so no grabbing for you
I really stink at Guard Impacts though... >_< Oh well... Nightmare and Seung Mina defeat El Queero any day.
