They are on the same premise as a Trojan Horse virus.Find an opening,and exploit it.They are automated programs send out,to find any form of web-page that they are able to place an automated message.Think of them as those phone calls you get during lunch time,saying you've won a luxury car,or something.

Your comparison to a trojan horse is terrible. Much like the event it is named after, it requires the user to let it in. Although I suppose you could call that an exploit..
