I heard that both Blue Burst and Universe have problems with the new Windows Vista.
Which isn't cool because for ten bucks Dell through in a free upgrade to my new computer to Windows Vista Home Premium when it releases. Well I just got my tracking number for my copy today via e-mail. Supposedly they're just now shipping but...I'm kind of hesitating to install it now when I get it...
I'm currently running Windows XP Media Center 2005 or some sort of that.
But considering Sega was lazy enough to simply copy coding for Blue Burst, and make both PSOs on the PC only for Windows...I'm concerned.
Has anyone else heard or seen anything about this?

Oh it's quite true. I really had to bully Vista around to get PSU running, but once I did manage to get it functioning is worked better than on XP... only because the game no longer took 3 minutes to boot... XD
The problem is simply a combination of two things:
1. DirectX 10 is completely new coding and thus, many many many old games do not work properly with it. Solution: Install the version of DirectX 9 that's on the PSU DVD instead.
2. Vista does something REALLY stupid. The ENTIRE Program Files directory is given limited access by default. Vista copies Linux in a way by using an "ownership" system. Unfortunately, Microsoft was too stupid to realize that most people like to modify the contents of the Program Files directory, and that most games REQUIRE this. Only a "Trusted Installer" is allowed to create new folders within the Program Files directory...
Now as for why this is a problem... it's because of GameGuard. In order for GameGuard to update fully a folder called "GameGuard" has to exist in the PSU program folder, but with Vista's new ownership system, GameGuard is not allowed to create this folder... thus it can't update, and so PSU will crash with one of its Japanese errors.
Solution: You have to steal ownership of the Phantasy Star Universe folder. This is done by right-clicking it, going to Properties, and I believe it's under the Security tab. Mess around in there a bit and you should find a way to take ownership of the folder. Once that's done, change the rights on the folder so you can create and modify files within it (giving yourself full control). This should fix the pesky errors... and if not... just manually make the GameGuard folder yourself.
I eventually got it running on Vista this way, but by the looks of things, Vista is going to make a ton of old games not work properly. I imagine any troubles with PSOBB are likely very similar and could be solved in the same way (what with Sega's blatant copying of source code and all).
So if you're willing to try experimenting with this hassle, go ahead, otherwise, stay on XP... it's likely the better choice. There's not enough new with Vista to bother, it's just more eye-candy.

Is there a way in windows vista to set the program files folder to not have the ownership system?

I as told not too long ago that a lot of games and programs don't run on Vista because the whole coding format and such has been changed. It's the main reason I'm not gonna get it until patches come out for the games I play to allow them to run properly on Vista. (I have a desktop PC with Vista and hardly any of the programs I put on from my laptop run)

Unfortunately Vista is retarded and forces the ownership system upon you automatically. This is Microsoft's idea of "security", which of course, means a huge head-ache for all.
You can manually take ownership of the entire Program Files folder, but Microsoft's ownership programming is so terrible, that when you take ownership of a folder, it seems to leave sub-folders alone, thus you'd have to take ownership of each and every folder individually, which is a nightmarishly long time.
If someone figures out a faster way, post it. XD If I ever have to put up with Vista I want to know how to manipulate it as well as I can XP.

Vista. It's 100%, Microsoft's new coding that creates these problems.

But that would mean creating something to bypass the windows security block, which is technically if not straight to it illegal.
Anyways thanks so much for the info Pink. Hopefully none of my other software will have problems with it.
Any chances you think Microsoft will realize the shouldn'tve done that and make a patch for it?

It's not actually cheating/illegal to circumvent the security settings on Vista.
I'm not sure if this will solve the problem, but turning off UAC (User Account Control) should at least stop all the annoying security pop-ups. To disable it, go to Startsâ¢Control Panelâ¢User Account Control and click Turn User Account Control on or off, select Continue at the prompt, then uncheck Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect computer, click OK, and restart your computer.
Hope this helps!
