Hello!

I'm doing a homework for my university's english classes, and I need information about the practice and profession of nursing in another country. I started speaking about the differences that I know about nursing in UK - Spain, and now I'm searching webs of nursing schools to see what they study (and compare with the classes I have done), the duration (here's 3 years), the post-degrees (I only know the midwifery), but I'm not finding nothing >___< I need your help: if you know something about the nursing profession in your country (and the post-degrees, etc), work, social recognition, etc, etc, etc.

PS: The comparation is about UK and Spain because I don't know nothing about another countries, only know about UK because I'd like to be midwife, and always I'm looking for information about it. In Spain is very difficult to acceed.

Here it is the first part of my project. I'd be thankful about comments or corrections that can help me to improve it (specially the gramatical mistakes or opinions about the nurse profession in your country).

Write a detailed description of the studies and profesion you have chosen. Compare them with studies and the practise of the profession in another country.

I’m studying nursing in the FUB (abreviation of Fundació Universitària del Bages), wich are located in the city of Manresa. We depend of the UAB, the independent university of Barcelona (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in catalan). I acceded to these studies three years ago, trought the selectivity exam, after my studies of bachillerat. This is my last year here. After June and, if I pass all the exams and homeworks, I will be nurse.
In this three years, nursing studients will do 225 credits, separate into three academic years. This credits includes obligatory classes, optatives and practice classes, in addition to practices in a medical center. Every year we stay a minimun of 4 weeks in a medical center. The first year is the most light, because everybody are new and our medical and nurse knowledges are very poor: a bit of anatomy, psicology, primary attention, the basics about our future profession, its history and the 14 basic human necessities described by Virginia Henderson, the model wich are based the nurse studies in the UAB program. Following this 14 necessities, we can elaborate a complete health program for each patient, and this is basicly the most important thing that we learned the first year. This 14 basic necessities are:

- Breathe normally
- Eat and drink suitably
- Eliminate by all the corporal routes
- Move and maintain a good position
- Sleep and rest
- Get dressed and to undress
- Maintain the normal temperature of the body
- Maintain the personal hygiene and of the skin
- Avoid dangers and injure other people
- Communication
- Beliefs and values
- Personal satisfactions
- Recreational activities of the person
- Learn

If one of this points presents a definiency, we can work it and try to improve it, defining wich objective (general and specific) we want to obatin, suggesting activities and working with the patient to obatin it. If the patient can’t make some of this points, we can suply him, but not in all the necessities (for example, we can’t suply his necessity of beliefs and values, but we can help him to contact with the priest of the hospital). This suplies can be total (for example, if we have a patient that must rest, we will suply for him his necessities of hygiene or move and maintain a good position) or parcial (if we aproach the tray of the food to this same patient). This knowledges about this 14 basic necessities will be one of the most important thing that we’ll use in our profession, it is basic to desenvolupate the nurse’s work.

The second year is, probably, the most difficult. We learned about specific illness and treatments, medication, laws, ethics, how to deal with patients and workmates….
The partice period is 8 weeks: 4 in a primary attention center and 4 more in a hospital. To the knowledges of the first year we add all our knew knowlegdes about illness, medication and treatments. We fuse all we know to treat our patients.

The third year is difficult too: we continue learning about adult illness and amplying the ones we learned the second year and start with pedhiatrics, about mothers and baby cares, phsychiatry and geriathrics. The class period is very short. We stay in practics mostly of the time, because is the last year and we need to gain experience in a different disciplines.

After receive a titulation of Nurse, we’ll can work in a hospital or in a primary center attention, or can do a post degree to amply knowledges about the discipline that you want to dedicate.
Recently, the spanish gobernment add specializations after finish the studies: psychatry, communitary nurse and pedhiatrics (midwifery). This specializations have a duration of 2 years, but if you want to enter, you have to do an exam before. Only the best studients can acceed to this specializations. During the classes, the post-degree studients have to do practice in a medical center, but only of his specialitzation, and can work as a normal nurse, because they have the titulation.

In England for example, midwife isn’t a nurse specialization: are another studies separate of nursery, and have a duration of three years. Also emphasize that the nursery profession in another countries is more recognized than in Spain. A nurse can obtain a doctored in her discipline, for example in the United States, but in Spain is only a diplomature, with the only chance of a post-degree. However, all the spanish nurses are waiting to see if this situation can change in the future: the gobernment and the unions are speaking about reconvert the nurse studies in a degree, before 2010.
