Did you know that Cao Cao's name is written like this in Chinese (if your computer can display it):
曹操

And is pronounced "Tsow tsow", rhyming with "wow!", with the accent on the second Cao?

("cao2 cao1" if you know "pinyin").

Also, the true way of writing it, if you don't want to use the DS/SW style naming, is Tsao Tsao.

What?

What is DS/SW style naming?
What do you mean "true way"?

Spelling it as 'Cao Cao' stems from Dynasty Warriors/Samurai Warriors games, along with the note-updated versions of the San-Kuo Chih T'ung-su Yen-i. However, the version of the San-Kuo translated by C.H. Brewitt-Taylor uses the un-romanticised names, such as Lu Pu (Lu Bu) Liu Pei (Liu Bei) Tsao Tsao (Cao Cao) and so on.

No, it doesn't stem from any game. It is the Pinyin (the official method of romanising Chinese (Mandarin)) form of 曹操.

Why would anyone want to go with what you call "un-romanticised names" nowadays? No one calls Beijing "Peking" anymore. BTW, it's "San Guo". So, interested in Chinese History? ^^

Very. -looks in own copy of the book- it says San-kuo here. There are multiple versions of the book, too. San-kuo chih p'ing hua (Plain Tales from the Three Kingdoms) Also, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms was written by Lo Kuan-chung, Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms was written by Ch'en Shou.

-quotes part of the book to show names-
Quote:Historian Ch'en Shou, who lived through much of the time he wrote about, had no clear favorite, although word choice would suggest he chose Wei, the northern state headed by the descendants of Ts'ao Ts'ao.
Quote:The original novel was named San-kuo chih t'ung-su yen-i, literally "Popular Elaborations on the Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms"
