"I Am Legend" Banned?

It's true. Will Smith's new thriller film I Am Legend has been banned in China, as part of a policy by the Chinese movie theatres, Hollywood films are capped, to reduce their influence. However, this is one of the few times the policy has been brought into effect outside of summer holidays, when viewing is much higher.

HOLLYWOOD - Will Smith's new movie [I]I Am Legend [/I]has suffered a major box office setback in the Far East--Chinese film bosses have banned it from their cinemas.

The Hollywood actor has been campaigning to secure a release for I Am Legend, but China is stubbornly sticking to its policy of capping the influx of Hollywood movies--part of a drive to boost the country's film industry.

The delay comes amid reports China has issued a three-month ban on all American films.

Smithsays, "We struggled very, very hard to try to get it to work out, but there are only a certain amount of foreign films that are allowed in."

However, the Oscar-nominated actor hasn't given up hope of agreeing a release date--he's currently working on a deal with China Film Group's chairman Han Sanping.

In the past, Chinese regulators have issued bans on foreign films during holidays and school breaks, when audiences are biggest.

we in portugal at one time had a very strickted rule when it came to info, many things were censured or blocked, but those days are over and now we deal with things like that after they happen, i guess china does not take any chances...lol

The main reason they're doing it is beause they feel Hollywood films are swamping their country, leaving little room for film-makers from there to get a look-in.

No, I can see their side, here. There are so many American films out that it takes the market away from the small to mid-time directors. That's why the theatre confederation takes these steps. Although this actual film somewhat appeals to me, so if I were a resident of China I'd be mad.

They'll get to see it eventually either when the ban gets lifted or when someone smuggles in a bootleg copy of it to sell. But I do understand why the chinese film bosses want to ban it. If you expose someone to something that's flashy and full of special effects during peak audience attendance. Then the people will want to see more of the same from there own film directers. And it could make it harder for there movie industry to compete during those times.

If people cared about the small and mid-time directors they would go and see their movies instead of the american ones. I support a free market.

The small and mid-time movies can't be shown due to too many big-time American film-makers, that's why these rules are in effect. I suppose you could compare it to a hosepipe ban or something.

Because they simply cant compete. If they could make a good movie and hype it up I doubt this would be a problem.

I can see your point in that. The only "good" movies I've seen from China are kung-fu type films. They have that down to a T, but everything else seems to be a struggle.
