I'm applying for a job, and it pays enough to switch my family's connection from modem, to braodband or a second phoneline.
My question is, which is cheaper, and hows does each method of connection work?

Cool, Good luck with that job application!
Obviously since i'm in the U.K. i can't tell you how much they each cost in America, but if you're asking which is more expensive between a second modem line and broadband, i wudda suspected that Broadband was slightly more expensive, but it's worth it, and of course its almost like getting a second line because others in the house can use the phone line even when you are online (To make phone calls, etc.).

That's mainly what I want. (For people to call and I can be online all day

)
I just have no clue how broadband works, which is why I didn't know which one would be better. Plus I have to consider an extra $40 for a different adapter.

Hmm... well, ofcourse its all up to you, atleast if you get broadband your computer can also benifit from the high speed. Usually, aside from the extra price of a different adapter, the price of getting a second phone line can be the same as getting highspeed... now if you live in the US prices of highspeed may be more (its pretty cheap sometimes here in canada

) The best thing that you should do is just check some of the ISP's in your area for prices. If its going to be cheaper for you in the long run to just get another phone line and play off that, then ofcourse thats what you would want to do. If however, you find that in the shortrun you need to pay a bit more to get highspeed but in the long run it might just turn out to be easier and/or better. Trust me, once you get highspeed you NEVER want to go back to dialup, lol
