6th form? whats that? Im curious to the school system in the UK. Here in America you have Elementary School which is Kindergarten through 5 or 6th grade (usually 6th but where i live 5th, oh and a grade is a year of school, so after a year of Kindergarten, you go to 1st grade, after a year of 1st, you go to 2nd, etc) then Junior High School or Middle school which is 6-8 grade and High School from 9-12. In High school you get titles (somewhat like College or University), in 9th youre a freshman, in 10th youre a sophomore, in 11th youre a junior and in 12th youre a senior and then you graduate. At the end of senior year, every high school in the US has a prom (as ive said, not all at the same time lol) and its a very formal dance (kinda like a ball) and thats what this thread is about.

Nursey school till 7.
Junior school till 11
Secondary school till 16. The first year of secondary school is "year 7" and goes to "year 11". Although it's not to be confused with "First year" going to "Fifth year". The next year is where we get "6th form" from .

That ends compulsory education. Most people go onto college or 6th form. College is not usually classed as a school but as a seperate educational building so to speak. It usually provides more choices for subjects, no dress code (we usually have to wear a uniform at school), and won't really chase you around if you haven't done the work.
6th form is when your school has the means to give you extra education. So you stay at your school and do A-lvls or GNVQs. Usual school rules apply, which means uniform and being there every day (at least in my school). Although we do get free periods so we can do what we want in those.
Both of these are from 16-18. In 6th form, that means each year is split into "upper" and "lower" 6th form.

There are usually parties/balls/proms at the end of fifth year and end of upper 6th form.

yeah that helps a lot, now im not confused. Oh and College here is just like it is there, since you pay for it, they arent strict about anything and if you dont do the work, they dont care (its your money to waste after all) and it is a seperate form of education here as well. You dont have to go to University however you would probably never get a decent job without a degree in something....

True dat. Ima get a degree in gaming. It's gonna be cool. If I can move to Vancouver Canada I can see if I can get a job with EA Sports and make NHL games. That'd be sweet.

Anyway, in years 7, 8 and 9 we have school discos (I'm in year 8 now) but recently it has been cancelled for year 9's forever because they got drunk etc. but I'm in year 9 next year it's not fair!

Yeah those things sounds like proms. Just proms that are held for each grade level instead of just for seniors like it is here. My prom date was so frickin hot......... DANGIT! LOL
