A Lil help on JP Phrases..

Now, being a FFXI player i have no choice but to speak JP (the game isnt even out in USA yet) so, you must adapt. Now most JP players do speak a minimal amount of english but rarely will you find someone who speaks both. But with a phew helpful phrases, you can earn their respect, and not be ignored


Ok. i suggest whenever you join a Group you say "yoroshiku". This Basically means "Welcome/Nice to Meet you". If you quickly follow that up with "Nihongo ga sukoshi wakarimasu" then hopefully they will understand you a little better. This means "I speak very little japanese", and hopefully they will be a little more considerate. "eigo Dekimasenka" could be used also, this is asking if they speak english, and "Eigo hanashimasu" means I speak English.

some simple words that can help you interact also

hai = yes
iie = no
ieie = no problem/dont worry
kinisinaide = no problem/dont worry
omedetou = congrats! (like when they level up)
arigatou = thankyou
gomen = sorry
sajounara = bye
tusukete = help


It is also considered, in a JP team to go blurting English all over chat. Keep you EN to a minimum and they wont get angry, if you do have to speak, keep it as simple as you can!



anyway, thats all im gonna say, i never have played PSO online so this all could be rubbish but as i play FFXI and am always interacting with JP people, it surely must help

Nicely said. Isn't it y instead of j in sayounara? Maybe is you become friendly with them you could use "matane" as "see you later" but sayounara would be better.

ohayoo gozaimasu - Good morning. Sometimes shortened to just ohayoo
konbanwa - Good evening.
konnichiwa - Hello

what i dont get though is how they understand japanese words written using the english alphabet..?

Thats very true, ive always wundered that. Theyre not to keen on the english language, yet they can understand their language in spelt in our language. Strange?! Or am i missin sumin!

They used to use a keyboard that had like 46 characters. Each one was a symbol and when typed it displayed that symbol. But they have stopped using that style of keyboard now really. They now use a western style QWERTY keyboard. Most of the symbols English equivalent consist of an english constanant and a vowel.

So when they type "ko" into PSO (or any other JP software) it shows that symbol. The same goes for most of the other symbols too. They are a few exceptions. See this little thing I created to help me translate Japanese text to english letters.



Certain sounds and letters are not in the Japanese language. They have real trouble with "r" and "l", they sound the same. So my name in Japanese is "ruke" becuase they don't have a "l" sound.

To cut a long story short, when you type say "konnichiwa" in english letters, they can understand because that's what they have to write to get it to show up in their symbols (hiragana in this case. There is also katakan and kanji but thats a whole different and complex thing :S)

err, i think, remind me to neva spend to long in Japan if i ever go there!! I guess it must b a little easier to speak jap, rather then write it!

I guess speaking JP is easy but not listening. A fully blown conversation is like a bullet train. Its damn fast. Reading and writing is much more useful. I think that learning to read Japanese is essential to the language. Like, JP can read our words, just not understand them fully. You (not you personally) can't even read JP, so how do expect to say it?

Just one question Ive been wonerding for a while, is FFXI any good? Ive been thinking about buying a PS2 just for that game (when it comes out of course). And have you played FFX-2 yet? If so, is that any good?

theres also "eigo ga dekimasu ka?"= do you speak english. Watashi Wa Amerikan (or Amerikjin)= I am american. "nani o shimasu ka?" what are you doing, "okaeri" (or okaeri nasai) =welcome back, adding "gozaimasu" to most things makes it more formal or adds a "very much" to the phrase. For example, "arigatou gozaimasu" is thank you very much, whereas "ohayou gozaimasu" and "ohayou" are both good morning but the former is more formal. "ittekimasu"= Im leaving (kinda implying youll be back). Doshite is why, doshita no= whats wrong. nani= what, anou=ummm. I have some others i wrote down but these should be sufficient.
