Help with BT Broadband (Please)
#1
Can anyone help me get PSO on line with BT broadband? I have a Nintendo Broadband adapter and have connected it to a standalone ethernet modem
(not connected to a PC) via a RJ45/10base T cable which is in turn connected to the microfilter. BT keep giving me conflicting advice and Nintendo are not there until Tuesday.
What is the ISP and is the service PPPOE or DHCP?
I know that the broadband service to my house is good as it works on my PC and I am using it now. However, the Gamecube has got me foxed.
Has anyone else got online with BT Broadband yet?
Thanxs

Hmm its weird that its not working for you.. It should be DHCP but remeber youll have to turn your modem off and then back on again whenever you connect it to your gamecube to refresh its local ip addresses.

Are you using the RJ45 cable that came with the modem?

Hi Sol,
I am using a Belkin RJ45 crossover cable (which supports base 10/100base-T) (GBP15 from PC World) coupled with a ADSL modem router (GBP60 from Maplins, manufacturer etec). The guy who sold me the router today in Maplins told me that it works without connection to a PC and that it should connect directly from the BT microfilter to the Gamecube. However, I have tried several of the options on the PSO set up page without any success. BT have told me that they cannot advise on Nintendo, only on their own products. However, they did give me a code to allow me to get on line via a 56K modem for free for 10 days but this runs out on Tuesday. My PC has a LAN port at the back but when I plugged the RJ45 into that yesterday and set up the network connections wizard my PC crashed and I could not get on line at all. When I disconnected the cable from the LAN port on my PC and reset the connection I was back to normal. PC World sold me a USP to Ethernet adapter but that did not help either and was GBP15 down the drain.
BT broadband claim that they have 3 million users in the UK so I guess that someone must have solved this problem already but I am really stuck.
With the cost of the broadband adapter for the Gamecube its all getting a bit expensive. If I cannot get the system to work then I may go back to BT connect lite and a 56K modem which at least works.
Unbelievable when I was in Maplins today another shopper who really didn't know one one of a game cube from the other tried to give me advice and kept contradicting the sales assistant. It was like a scene from the fast show with the ginger idiot in the pub!!!
The modems which BT supply are hardwired to a USP plug so cannot connect to the gamecube. I did call Nintendo on Friday but they were next to useless and just told me to try plugging the gamecube into the back of the PC.
I have managed to set up two PCs and one laptop to broadband so I hope that I am not completely stupid but the gamecube really has me foxed.
Can you help?

Tell me if ive got this wrong but i assume your modem connects to your pc via a USB slot. But you want to connect your gamecue direct to your modem by using some RJ45 cable. You should be able to do this although typically modems require standard 'straight' RJ45 and not 'crossover'. Crossover cable is mostly used for connecting up 2 pcs as a kind of mini-lan without the need for a hub or switch etc.

If youd rather not have to go out and buy some more cable you could setup internet connection sharing, whereby you connect your gamecube to your pcs LAN card and your modem to the USB slot as usual. If you have windowsXP setting up ICS is a piece of cake.

Hi Sol,
The Broadband Modem which BT supplied has a hard wired USB plug.
The BBA for the Gamecube has an RJ45 female socket (I think).
I initially tried going to the gamecube from the modem via the LAN socket on my PC but I could not get this to work at all and my system crashed. I have Windows ME as my operating system and there is a local area network wizard icon on my desktop. Yesterday the man on the help desk at PC World recommended a using a USB to Ethernet adapter on the back of my PC (i.e. using two USB sockets). However this did not work either and it caused my PC to crash. I am not convinced that an LAN socket and an NIC socket are the same.
Today I went to Maplins where they told me that an broadband modem router would be the answer to my problems for GBP60 as it come preloaded with software and does not need to be connected to a PC. However, it has not solved anything as I still cannot get on line via the Gamecube. I still have the receipt so I may take it back on Tuesday for a refund.
It is getting to the stage where I think that I may cancell my broadband account and go back to dial up. The gamecube is actually belongs to my son who uses it for PSO but if he cannot use it on Broadband then I think that I will cancel my Broadband account with BT and go back to 56K modems as I do not see why he should lose out.
Thanks

Did you try normal RJ45 rather than 'crossover' and turning your modem off at the socket and then back on again?

Apaprt from that im out of ideas.. a router is the easiest way to go (reltively) but its also the most expensive. Id recommend upgrading to XP too as ME isnt worth the effort, especially when you want to do anything like this.

If you use the net regularly then id recommend sticking with broadband. 56k modems are just too old and slow.

Theres also a good net connection guide at xbox.com that might prove helpfull:
http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/live/start/connect/ (dont worry about it being xbox, its all the same for gamecube Smile)

Hi Sol,
Thanks for the link. I just called BT broadband and threatened to close all my accounts with them unless they helped me. (I am a business user and have a resonable account with them). They then told me that my router had to be set up first with my PC before I could use it with Nintendo. However, the sales man in Maplins told me that on no account should I connect the router to my PC at any time. I should just take it out of the box and use it as it is. I am going back to Maplin tomorrow to ask for advice and also to buy a non-cross over cable.
If this does not work then I will cancel my BT broadband connection, go back to 56K modems and get a refund from Maplin and PC World. I admit that modems are slow but at least they do work for all my PCs and laptops and also allow my son to play PSO which is his major hobby.
I am assuming that you have managed to get PSO online with broadband. What did you type into the boxes on the PSO setup page. PPOE or DHCP?
Thanks for the help it is greatly appreciated all the same.
Life used to be so much less complicated back in the 1960's!! I used to have a clockwork train set and that never crashed or had system errors.
Thanks

The idea of a router is to share an internet connection. Unless you dont want internet access on your pc then you dont have to connect it.

I am betting that this is the actual problem. 99% of all modems and routers require 'straight-through' RJ45.

Ahh the joy of computers. To be honest unless youre doing something youve done before with pcs the chances are that things wont work and youll feel like dropkicking it across the room.

Hmm.. i dont know how bts broadband service works... if you had to login somewhere along the line to be able to connect to the net then it will more than likely be PPPoE and you should log in with your username/password. Basically they both autmoatically obtain and assign your networks ip addresses only PPPoE requires authentication.

Hi Sol,
We got there in the end. Thanks for your help. I also got some help from BT in the end but only after I told them that I would close all my accounts with them. It should not really take such extreme action to get technical help from a ISP server's help desk but there you go!!
Its obvious to me now that the best way to get decent help is to go via the unofficial sites such as ragol and not via shops and server helpdesks.
Anyway now I have found your site my son (who is on line right now with PSO) can join in the chat via the message boards.
Many many thanks
Mimas
