2 questions...

1.) Do you have to be online in order to take snapshots??

2.) Is there anyway to check and see if your Serial Number works? *Bought my copy from GameCrazy.*

1) lol, no, just plus a controller into the 4th control slot and snap away. you can only have one saved offline (not sure if you can have more online)

2) I actually don't know since I'm not online. I'm guessing if its not used then it should work ^_~. if it is used, you could try to use it online and if it says its already in use, email sega and ask them to reset it

1.) In addition to archer's answer, only 1 is allowd for that file. Doesn't matter what mode it was taken in. (online or offline)

2.) Basically just enter it and you'll find out. It will obviously work if it's new, but theres a chance it won't if you bought it used because the player who previously owned it might not have deactivated his/her account.

1) You can have one snapshot per memory card snapshot file. If you've got 7 other memory cards, with snapshot files on them all, then u can have 7 in total :p

2) You can check if it works or not by creating a account on http://www.playsega.com (European im guessing, otherwise http://www.sega.com). Since your new to online im guessing youll need to do that anyways so check beforehand by creating an account in advance. When it comes to entering your serial number and access key, itll then tell you whether theyve already been used or not. However its been a while since i registered my account, and i cant remember whether the serial number and access key is entered at this stage or on the Gamecube setup. No harm in trying though.
