Well, maybe not that genius, but not as dim as you make them out to be (I hope!). Maybe the teaching has got better, but many people (online, that is) no longer pay attention to spelling and grammar. Language is just communication, so as long as the point gets across, they don't seem to be bothered.

I know I wasn't here long enough but Orphan was to me a little friendly. I have seen some of his bad posts. But all I can say is that DM is right he's gone get over it.
