Forgot : In English we tend to ignore how the original character sounded. The voice is a defining part of a character and hence plays an important role in defining them. For example Kratos in Tales of Symphonia has a very gruff voices in Japanese. He sounds like an older mercenary with a lot of exprience, an age of 30-40ish. In the English version he sounds cocky and care free, probably 20-30ish and basicly he's a cocky kid who's good and knows what he's doing but hasn't got the exprience of age with him.
The first shows Kratos was much truer to final secret revilations. Where as the second just makes him seem like a pathetic lacky who will give up stabbing stuff the second he starts to show age.

As for your new post.. Well would you go "okay I'm not looking at this picture in full colour. I want just black and white".
And no, because we have the original we can make out the context even if the subtitles are wrong.
I'll explain it to you in a simple way. Slayers anime
Woman : Gourry-Sama!
Direct translation : Upperclassman/Master Gourry
Subtitles : Dear Gourry!
The Subtitle is 100% wrong... as in, it's not even remotely close. The context of the relationship changes based on a single word..
The "big" difference is the names you see. A lot is said by how someone addresses another.. It's something you just can't translate and keep accurate.. so most the time they don't unless it's Sama as said above.. which is quite often done in the wrong context as well
I would like the option to listen to it in the original language. You could still have your dub but why should I have to suffer an edited product just because you want to? Options are good, lack of options are bad.
Also because I like being a bitch : Japan screams better. People in English get embrassed about shouting and screaming heroicly.. in Japan not so.. hence why it;s just more fun to have an action game in Japanese..
Forgot something else!
You mention "subs and dubs are the same", but they arn't. Dubs try to fit the mouths. So they will edit the line untill they can say it with the mouth movement. It is infact VERY bad if both the sub and dub matchs. Because if they do it means the sub has been copied from the dub's edited translation. There was a huge fuss over Zeta Gundam's boxset for this exact reason. Don't confuse sub and dub, they are completely different
This is why Advent's children was delayed. They redited all the CGI so the mouth movements fit in English. That way nothing had to be edited in the dialog. Fun little bit of trivia

I like to edit things don't I..
Also I'm from the land known as Eng. I don't much care for the way Americans sound.. It irritates me and I'd really rather not listen to some American kid for hours and hours.. Infact I would rather have him not talk at all..
See another point? Japanese characters shouldn't talk in American accents.
