Lord Cloud: There ISN'T a high risk of FSOD if you take the necessary precautions... basically just stay out of the US popular block (currently Antares 8) and keep backups of your weapons and items if possible.
I've never been corrupted, but at one point I was told by some moron friend to delete my sys file in order to remove serial number info from my card. It deleted my characters shortly after. I lost a bunch of junk items, of course, but my most important stuff was backed up (I lost about 32 PDs but I restored them myself, since the PD-duping glitch wasn't fixed in plus). I've lost a couple things to FSOD, most of them backed up, but some of them "lost grinds" because the backup had less. Currently "I owe myself":
One Meteor Cudgel 0/0/0/0/0
One Plantain Huge Fan 0/0/0/0/0
45 Grinders (20 on a Holy Ray, 25 on a Red Scorpio)
