I just found something interesting.

Several objects about the size of small mountains on the surface of Mars are arranged in positions such that they form an astronomical scale model representing the Sun and the planets Mars, Earth and Venus in an area about 30km square, shown on NASA Viking photograph 70A13. Another more remote structure, shown on NASA Viking photograph 561A26, is of the size and position to represent Jupiter on this scale model. Note: Viking image reference 561A26 is not correct it should be 072A10

Indeed. Though I feel the need to point out that those images are ten years old, the actual evidence is still there to view, regardless. Also, I quite like the face they found, it makes me think maybe the Martians, whatever they may be, have a human side to them as well.

What I mean is just like early humans, they may not have the best tools for what they want to do, so their art is rough around the edges, but just like humans in the early days, they got on with what they had.

back on topic now, we wouldnt need to create a magnetic field on Mars for sometime, would could build a structure, like a biodome with material used in spacecraft, protecting from the elements. Then create a magnetic field within that, small enough to be contained and controlled, we could use O2 brought from earth in canisters, and guess what? we could freeze the water and ship it out! send along some food, and bang! we have a functioning colony
