Except for backup duping (which was discussed in another thread and thus, not here, but I personally support), the only way to guard items is to bank them before you leave the game. This does not cover random FSODs, however.
Rena has a point... try starting a game from a non-1 lobby. What you should do is find legit players, get as many of their guild cards as you can, and soon you'll be able to simply look for them using your card list. Don't join them if they're in Vega though, I would say. I've rarely seen anyone but illegits there. All the US ships are in an uncertain state right now due to hacker efforts, so I'd hang out in the EU ships... Regulus and Polaris might be where hackers hang out in EU, but other ships there seem safe. Not sure.
I'd disagree with Rena on one point: you can probably accept any 9-star rares unless they have crazy percents, because most players have 10 million of those anyway and would give them away at the drop of a hat.
Just don't go accepting Zanbas and Sealed Js.
