Indeed, DBZ is ridiculously edited.
- All the swearing taken out (I remember watching a subbed episode, the first thing Goku said was 'oh s***')
- In other translations, Kami (which means 'god') is referred to in the language itself. I learned this when playing Budokai 3 in French and Piccolo's Fusion with Kami was called Fusion avec Dieu (Dieu being French for god).
- HELL in the Japanese one was considered too offensive for broadcast. So they removed a couple of lines from the word, and voila! HFIL, which was explained away as standing for Home For Infinite Losers.
- Digitally removing a cigarette from a character's mouth, and the whole root beer thing.
It's not as bad on DVDs, but to watch it as it was intended (i.e. not as a kid's show) you have to watch subbed Japanese episodes, unless you speak fluent Japanese of course
