I really, really like Neon Genesis Evangelion!
It does have a bit to do with Christianity.. apart from the robots in it being called Evangelions, there are quite a few bible references and so on. The attacks by the angels are apparantly close what is said in the Dead Sea Scrolls (an ancient Jewish script). What with it concerning the fate of humanity, it has quite a lot to do with every religion really..
You've got me remembering it now, I think I'll watch it some more at some point!
I'm not sure about the last 2 episodes becoming much clearer if you switch on your brain. You seemed geared to read it through the director's life, but you could just as easily think of it through seperate points of view within the characters. They're certainly open to interpretation. ..I guess you are quite onto something when it shows the different ways the series could've gone, but they're just as much different ways the character's lives could've gone. Hm.. haven't seen them for a while, think I'll be watching them too!
Anyway, Shinji isn't too bad of a character. I find it is still quite easy to relate to him (it's tough being one of the few possibilities to save the human race, afterall, with such an estranged father), and he's not overly passive (Lain, anyone?).
