The only real reason Nintendo have whacked on a DVD Playback accessory is because at the time the Gamecube was being sold, many immediately went for PlayStation because it was the cheapest with the most features, such as DVD/CD/VCD playback, and those kinda features attract other people to the machines. If it doesn't have it this time around, people would have really slated the company with its 'THIS IS A GAMES MACHINE NOT A CD PLAYER!' attitude. To me though, i'm always won over by dedication to games. I've got my PC for music and films... well actually i'm quite happy it's got the feature now as it means i can watch them on my tv now come to think of it ^_^
Still Nintendo concentrate on the games, that's what they're about - the DVD thing is a one-time accessory and once it's made it doesn't get updated or anything because it doesn't need to be. Microsoft though have really gone insane though with their entertainment center. All this Windows Media Center PC/Xbox hook-up, wi-fi, connectivity, etc etc, i've lost track of all of that's going on there :S
