I think that it is wholly possible for such a thing to work, for if someone truly loves someone else, then nothing will be able to get in the way of that. Direct communication becomes difficult, but communication nevers ends.
There is also that old saying, "Absence makes the heart grow fonder."
Whilst I am currently not in a relationship, I have just moved to university; several of my friends are continuing relationships from back home. There are difficulties, but none of them have given up yet, and I don't see it quickly happening. What I have seen happen is interest in other people, although my friends that have remained in relationships realise that it was only lust, and that the love for their partner was too great to throw away for a bit of physical indulgence.
In another friend, I see the jealousy of his partner, but still they remain together. In these cases, everything is new and yet to be experienced, but I am really happy that my friends have remained with their partners.
Long distance relationships do work, but they are different from close proximity relationships in a way that I am unable to grasp directly, having never been in one.
