Akira wasn't confusing. In the 80's, a psychic explosion occurs that surpasses the power of an atomic wepon, destroying Tokyo. That begins WWIII. After the war ends, and the rebuilding of Neo-Tokyo is complete, it is divided into two sections. Neo Tokyo, and the Old City. Old City is where Kaneda's Heroics and the other bike gangs run rampant. One night, while fighting the Clowns, a rival gang, a young boy runs in front of Tetsuo's bike and Tetsuo hits the boy, or so it seems. The boy established a psychic barrier that protected him, and almost kills Tetsuo. Tetsuo is one of the member's of Kaneda's Heroics This sets off Testuo's latent psychic abilities that would have otherwised remained hidden, the young boy is the product of a psychic military unit that Japan's military was developing for combat. Simple enough, it then leads into the movie. That's easy enough to understand.
They do leave some things out of the movie that was in the manga, like Tetsuo becoming the leader of the Clowns and killing off all of the Heroics and Clows with the exception of Kaneda and the guy that is with them at the end of the movie. Otherwise, the two are similar. And as stated above the animation was two decades before it's time. It is one of the only films from the eighties that I can watch without gaging. Where you compare it to things like Dragon Ball, ect. =/
As for Gundam SEED, yes I did watch it, All the way up about till halfway through Destiny. And still it lagged in story. The only thing that kept Kira from dying the whole time was his beserker thing. I forgot what they called the genetically engineered humans, but that was what started the war. Humans vs. their superior genetic counterparts.
