Time seemed to have stopped. Hours? Days? Years? Time meant nothing to either of them as they walked deeper into the living ruins. The denizens of the underworld hunted them, ethearal eyes gleaming with hatred. Several times they barely escaped with their lives. The cockiness, the arrogance, had been knocked out them, their egos had faded away, and the realization of why they were down in this forsaken crack of the world.
"Do you really think we'll find them?" whispered Nelene.
"A whole research team...they can't have gone far..." murmered Alura.
She did not want to voice it out loud, as if she would seal all their fates.
"They had hunters to back them up. They had Myaa Vega, after all." she added, to hastily to make it seem beleivable.
Myaa Vega, the legendary HUnewearl. A heroine, whose fame was only surpassed by Red Ring Rico.
"If we see her, we can ask for her autograph." Nelene smiled weakly. Even though neither of them wanted to trouble the other, both were thinking the same. If a heroine had met her death in these winding pasages, what chance did they stand?
With each step they took, both of them felt it. What was it? Their minds felt it, like a song whose words are forgotten, and the brain tries to snatch it back. Sometimes they could hear laughter, or a voice that snarled in a bestial language.
When the snarls and the laughter had reached their loudest, they arrived at two gigantic double doors. Out of all of the doors they had seen, this one was very different. They was as tall as several houses, and covered with flowing, elongated runes. At its centre was a glowing, cracked incantation. And both Nelene and Aulura felt nothing but darkness behind those doors. They stepped back, as though the darkness would seep through the doors and engulf them.
"Let's go back!" Alura whispered, her voice on the edge of hysteria. "We'll die!"
"We cannot." Nelene hissed in a strange voice.
"Walk away and save ourselves? Is that...."
"Selfishness." finished Nelene in that voice. Shadows licked across his slender frame, like dark embers.
"We cannot go backwards. Only forwards, do you not see?" he raised his hands. Behind them, to Alura's horror, the way they came shut with a sigh.
"Now come." said Nelene gloated. "To me. Come through these beautiful, elegant doors." With a hiss, Nelene sank to the floor.
"What happened?" he asked in his normal voice.
"You were poscessed. Again." Alura replied, trying to keep the despair out of her voice.
"Really? Who was it?"
"Just a lonely spirit. Needed someone to talk to."
"Oh. What...happened to the way we came?"
"Don't worry....it should open soon, I think the switch is on the...on the..
other side."
And together, they walked towards those forbidding doors.
