Its actually very simple to back up your character. You need to buy an Action Replay. You can get them in electronics stores. It hooks up to your pc, and it comes with a special memory card. What you do is transfer your character to the memory card, copy the data in that memory card to your pc(this data becomes perminent in your pc unless you delete it) , and then transfer the character from the momory card back the your Xbox. This is how i back up my character. It seems my game freezes once a week, so i dont even worry now. Alot of people dupe using this method, however. Its sad to see people sucking the fun out of playing honestly

Im not sure what post it was in. I cant remember, but I'm sure you said it.
As for backing up your character, does that way only work for the XBox version, cause I've got the Gamecube one.

No. chrisalvarez55 was talking about the GC version I think. I agree, this is porbably the most used (and easiest) method to dupe on the GC.

Shame really. Most people want to back up there characters just incase the worst happens, and other people use it to dupe their weapons.

Is it common to get FSOD-X on the Gamecube? If it is, how can I prevent from it happening?

No its not really that common but when you dupe there is a possibility that your game can freeze.A few of my friends got F-SODed a couple of times. And I got robbed by a HUmar called sanghoan.

You've were on a few weeks ago and saw harmony?! lol. Dupes will probably be easier to see now as traders will dupe photon spheres and add them to weapons to add %s. So expect dupes to have higher percents now. Although some people might keep them to their old values.
You are probably best going into a game and staying there for a while. If the people are friendly and don't seem to be using dupes then ask them for their guild card. Try and build up a small network of friends if you are against duping.
