Forces are pretty tricky to start with, just because you won't have a higher character to help out on the financial side of things. At a low level, fluids can be pretty costly because your TP:Tech Cost ratio is unfavorable. Generally you can't get too much casting out of a fluid because you have to cast so much to kill. If you have no idea what you are doing in PSO, I say start with a Hunter or Ranger. I started with a ORAN Hunter, and I never regretted that through all his 108 levels. As for ID...

ORAN: If you want to be bombarded with crappy 9* daggers. Also finds the best armor in the game, IMO. (huggles piped Aura Field)
WHITILL: Two words. Guld Milla. And crappy 9* slicers. Also has a lot of good Hunter drops
SKYLY: Best Hunter ID, IMO. Finds lots of good swords, i.e. Red Sword, Chainsawd, and.....Sealed J Sword (1/12XXX)
PINKAL: Crappy. Avoid. Please. Don't be like my Force, finding 9* wands all over the place... However, has a pipable Agito 1975.
PURPLENUM: Best Ranger ID, also has a pipable Psycho Wand. Finds lots of mechguns, can also find all of the Yasminkov weapons.
BLUEFULL: Another crappy ID. Lotsa partisans...lots of them.
VIRIDIA: The shot ID. Doesn't find too much of interest.
YELLOWBOZE: Great for finding enemy parts and other cool rares. Also has higher chance of EP. II hit %.
GREENILL: The rifle class. Good ranger ID.
REDRIA: Has the best chance of finding the sets of "RED" weapons. Also finds all the "GOD" units pretty easily. Balanced everywhere else.

Now comes the character classes from best to worse. This is all based off personal experience and other research.

Don't be iluded by that thing: "Forces are for experts" and "Hunter are for beginners".

What this means is that forces sucks to begin with, cause they're are always wasting moneys with fluids. And hunters are strong, and don't need to keep buying items, so they're best to start with.

If you ask me, section IDs don't really matter. Offline I am a Yellowboze though on Blue Burst, though I am a Bluefull, I make just about as much Meseta as I would have had I remained a Yellowboze. It all depends on a character's name, anyway, and why change a name to obtain a certain ID?

Now, I'm not as sharp with my PSO knowledge as many of you are, and some of this may have been said before, if not more than once, but I feel the need to add my two cents. Or three, or four, doesn't matter to me, really.

The best starting class, really, depends on skill if you ask me. I'm a HUmar only because my character was modeled after an existing character that was designed for a not-PSO world, but Hunters really are good to start out with. You die a lot, but you get a good grip on the mechanics of the game when you're right up in the faces of the monsters. If you just wanna kill things and really like guns, then be a Ranger. You can still kill enemies without running as high a risk of getting hurt as Hunters do.

I don't recommend starting out with a Cast (aka android) character. Sure they have power, and recover HP by standing still, but when you finally create a technique-using character, you have no idea what you're doing with them. Start out with a Human or a Newman, and I'll just go ahead and note that Newmans can recover Technique Points by just standing there.

I'll also side with the "don't start with a Force" crew. I know a FOmar, a very timid man by the name of Feugo, and though he looks great (very, very fashionable class), he's lacking in attack, defence, and overall HP. Dies like he was never alive in the first place... Though, once you learn the game and get a higher-leveled Force, they're quite a useful asset to any team.

Alright, done talking now, I'm sure we're just running around repeating ourselves at this point.

Well I can certainly say I agree with you on the "don't start with a droid" opinion. A friend of mine started with a RAcast, then made a HUcaseal, and then jumped to a FOnewm... and I can imagine, that's a pretty damn big crash course there. Tongue Yeah, start with one of the four balanced characters.

Fabo: for rangers, I think this may be more appropriate:
Offline: RAmarl/RAcast (tied), RAmar, RAcaseal
Online: RAmar/RAcast (tied), RAmarl, RAcaseal

Offline, RAmarls can do the most damage out of any ranger because of her lv 20 support techniques, but a RAcast has the helpful ability to set and detonate his own traps quickly. Online, more often than not you are under the SAME shifta/deband, which is usually provided by a support FO, so a RAmar and RAmarl playing together under that shifta will leave the RAmar more powerful (Kefka once said RAmarl is better than RAmar online because of the support techs, but this is why I don't believe so). Even if there is no FO, when an equally-leveled RAmar and RAmarl play together the RAmar will do more damage because he'd be under the RAmarl's lv20 shifta (unless you have a rather stingy RAmarl who won't share her support techs Tongue). I've never played a RAcaseal, and I don't really intend to in the future, but I put her last because her good qualities (DFP, EVP) have little to do with attacking the enemies, which online is mostly what you have to worry about (offline, theoretically, her strengths may be more apparant, because she'd have to block and take hits more often if she weren't in the presence of hunters doing the close-in damage).

Indeed, a good area to help with such a decision is Ragol.co.uk's Character Page. My prime suggestions of classes are:

Hunter - Beginner
HUnewearl
HUcast

Ranger - Intermediate
RAmarl
RAcast
RAmar

Force - Advanced
FOmar
FOmarl
FOnewearl

Those are the best classes, in my opinion.

Rangers should of been for beginners, they have ranged attacks. Hunters are risky since you need to get in close
