What does luck do exactly?

Yes, all luck does is increase your chances of a critical hit. 100 is the max and it will never go beyond 100. Here's how it works...

25% of your total LUCK becomes your chances of a critical hit. So if you had 50 LUCK you'd have a 12.5% chance of a critical hit... 25% for 100 LUCK, etcetera, etcetera.

i thought luck could go beyond 100? i mean, i thought with 4 god/lucks and some lck boosting weapon you could hit a luck value of 230? (l+k combats, loads of lck mats and 4 god lucks )

Nope. The max of all characters is 100. 100 is as high as it goes and that's final.

The base max is 100, but it can go higher... only slightly though.

- Slot items, materials, and mags increase the base stat.

- Frames, Barriers, and Weapons increase the non-base stat. (The one outside of the parenthesis.)

Sooooo, if you got 100 LCK using materials and/or God/Luck and/or God/Ability, you can still go past it using a weapon. (No Barriers or Frames increase LCK.... not for EP1&2 anyway... maybe in BB though....)

A Hunewearl has a maximum maxed max of 115 (100 base + 15 from the Heart of Poumn). (28.75% chance of critical)
Anyone else can get 110 by maxing the base and using L&K Combats... There are other weapons too, but I'm feeling lazy right now. (27.5% chance)

Luck will get you more rare drops, will allow you to encounter a lot of rare enemies, will help you survive Megid, meet lots of cool people online, win the lottery, will positively affect your love life, and will in general help you on your quest to become happy.
You might have meant 'LCK' though, which just increases your critical hit ratio by 0.25% per point.

Ah, that's a misconception... There is no way to increase your non-base LCK/MST without increasing your base stat of it.
