Why did DC fail!?
#21
I didn't see a single DC advert. Not a sausage. Although to be fair, I haven't seen that many for other consoles. Maybe I don't watch enough TV o_O;;;

simple they released a un finished console both times they rushed sega themselves have admitted this Quite simply they got the dc out to beat ninty and sony to the punch but it was to early they jumped the original release date by about a year giving sony more than enough time to know exactly what they were up against and improve fact is they gave sony what they prayed for a chance to make the ps 2 hav what the dc lacked so although at first dc sales looked promising when ps2 hit the shelves dc became a complete flop over night this and the fact that sega lost alot of money in the saturn they decided to cut there losses in the dc and not bother fighting realisticly it probly the only reason that sega still around but that said ninty's is fighting hard with the gc and winning all they need to do is team up with sega on a joint console (kill bill gates and microsoft!!) and watch sony and microsoft just fall away!!!

Here in the US I saw tons of commercials and I saw DC evertime I went to stores. It just didn't have the amount of games people wanted. I was too busy with my PSX and NES to even want a DC. Now I've officially turned into a Nintendo Loyalist and will have nothing to do with any of the other non-Nintendo consoles. Even if Sega were to make another console I wouldn't buy it, I support how great a company Sega is but their consoles never appealed to me. Like I said in my earlier posts, I bought DC merely as a collector's item and to have the original Sonic Adventure and PSO games.

The ps2 hype destroyed it realy. The DC was decent and could have been a competator in the console wars. Sega always release their consoles early to get a nice start Tongue If the dc had been marketed more and they pushed more games from the system it could have been great. The rumours of the ps2 made every1 wait for it e.g. the emotion chip that would learn how you play to make the games more suited to your style of play, i have never noticed a ps2 game doing anything like that Angry

hmm the emotion chip 'learns to play the game how you want it' its like the bloody government empty promises. the chip has never been used it seems and isnt that just the same as most fighting games did anyway, learn you style to make it harder? The commercials or lack of were mainly in Europe or at least the UK. Japan had loads same with the saturn.

[QUOTE=Lee-yoshi]I honestly reckon is was just too ahead of its time. It amazes me how SEGA's consoles go down the toilet while others pick up. The SEGA Game gear is another example which was much more advanced then any GameBoy at the time and is still i reckon competition for the GBA. It was just way ahead of it's time and should have maybe been marketed a bit more.

Completely agree! Its funny how the Dreamcast dies, and every console from now on seems to borrow ideas that the Dreamcast actually employed! Its amazing how it failed, but lets day the Dreamcast had a Sony name on it! It would have been the other way around, it would have sold loads!

At least Gamecube has carried on a lot of the great games from the DC. Always good to see that Nintendo has such strong ties with SEGA.

I remember picking up both the Saturn and the Dreamcast myself. I had a 7 mile walk home when I picked up the Saturn (car was in the shop for a week while the brake techs were on vacation). I had waited till the Saturn dropped in price before picking it up and scored Virtual Crack... err... Virtual On for the system.

The Dreamcasts... one was the imported DC I picked up from Anime Crash (now since dead in MA) and picked up KOF99. The US DC I picked up during my lunch break from Valmar err Wal-Mart and left it in my car under my jacket. (Manager had "walked by" my car and saw the DC under the jacket thinking I had stolen it, showed him my receipt (from Game Stop) in front of 2 officers and called him an idiot.) Picked up Blue Stinger too. Then Virtual On OT and Record of Lodoss War and PSO.

As to why I think the DC failed, I know SEGA did a half assed job marketing the system. The whole "It's thinking" ad campaign did little in my mind to convince me to look at the system, and a friend of mine wasn't too thrilled about the system till he saw my imported DC. He went nuts and when it came out in the US he picked his up after work.

The DC had everything right, online play, four controller ports, serial port, web browsing, 56k/broadband modems, and the most comfortable controller design next to the Playstation. As with the PS2, GameCube, and Xbox the DC's launch titles were mediocre and parents didn't want to trust their kids with the discs preferring cartriges. The DC had the Playstation and N64 nailed in terms of overall power, graphics, and options. Yet the two systems flew off the shelves at a rate of 10 to 1. System returns in the first few months were just as dismal, out of every 10 systems sold 6 would come back to be exchanged for a Playstation or N64. The rest were either defective or died from abuse.

Little did gamers know they'd be shooting themselves in the foot settling for one system rather than having multiple systems and missing out on games that could have been.
