I think the ending meant that humans as a species were evolving in order to be able to handle the psychic power Tetuo was not or something like that. Even so, look at the art from other anime movies and series from the 80's and you'll see how truly amazing it is. Even today, when he presses the psychic dome against the wall and makes the walls implode it still amazes me.
