I think Cooldude is grasping at straws, eh?

To clarify the definition:

Fantasy: Princes, princesses, wizards, dragons, things that could never happen no matter how much you want them to. Hint.....Final FANTASY....gettin' it now. If you'd like to read some, start with something your sure to find like the Lord of The Rings, you may be able to find the The Wheel of Time books somewhere..... The first book is called "the Eye of the World" in case your interested.
Some popular authors mentioned in this thread:
J.R.R Tolkien
Robert Jordan
Terry Prachet
Orsen Scott Card

That's about as easy as I can make it for you a lot of the authors mentioned are really popular so it should be really interesting to find thier works. Any body else got some good authors names'?

I think now that we have the basics down we should discuss the important story elements in a fantasy novel. Try to chose one to give the other board members a chance to reply. I'll go first.

Note: Fantasy was invented in the 14th or 15th century when a guy wrote all the stories for King Arthur, but then the genre was called .......here it comes.....ROMANCE! Boy how the times they have a changed.

Okay one of the first things a fantasy novel has to have is an element of magic. Whether it be called magic or not and the element does not have to be magic as the way we think of it, it could be something like creatures that don't exist or things that don't occur here on Earth(don't ask me what I'm not really sure).I'll use some examples:

Wheel of Time series: Saidar and Saidin: The female and male halves of the True Source.

The Sword of Truth series: The magic in the Sword of Truth

Lord of The Rings: The resistance to the Ring that Frodo has, even when every other other has failed to resist it's temptation.

Harry Potter: He flys on a broom Tongue

Yes he did wright those. I also believed he wrote several others not about the Ender's series.

Sorry about the double post. I'll pm a mod and get them to merge them.

there was fantasy before that... they where mostly called myths and the like tho, look into greek religion.

also i think some of the first "modern" fantasy was from various short story writers... hate to bring school into my posts but we are studying nathanual(spelling?) hawthorn.

Yes, thank you. I really do try to not spam, I've been banned from 1 forum 1 time before for it, so I learned my lesson well.

At any rate, the Series of Unfortunate Events movie doesn't look TOO great to me, but as Teh EkwEE said, Jim Carrey is a splendid actor so perhaps I will see it.

Tolkien is one of my favorite authors, no doubt about it. How could somebody like him go to such lengths to publish such grand books, and then not like the man? Excellent person, it would have been an honor to meet him in person. Did you know his books like Lord of the Rings were orginally being written for his children?
