When good Anime gets edited!
#1
I was thinking about all the things I've heard lately about Anime being changed for western audiences, mostly because of violence and stuff.

For Example -

In Yu-Gi-Oh, apparently if Yugi lost a battle he'd get sent to the 'shadow realm' but in the Japanese one he just gets killed. Tongue

Another in on Shaman King where (if you watch it) Faust has kidnapped Morty, apparently in the Japanese version he pulled Morty's heart out, but that was also too violent for us.

The last example is that in One Piece they got rid of all the blood and they call any alcoholic beverage 'juice'. Tongue

Now I'm not saying I don't like Anime because of this. In fact, I really like it. It's just annoying that our laws are so much stricter than in Japan. Some of these would make for some interesting viewing!

Outlaw Star had death, nudity, swearing and violence, but it had to be on after 9 because of this, and the people decided editing most things was better than having them on late... Oh well, Outlaw Star is kickass anyway.

Anyway, I want to you to tell me about other things that were taken away, added or changed for our sensitive minds. Tongue This should be interesting.

*nod* *nod* I have seen Outlaw star, chrissakes they could ATLEAST put the gory versions on after 9pm or so.

A show that got badly edited was Tenchi OAV, good lord, the first sight of blood and "omg better get rid of it"

A ridiculous edit was when Kiyone gets a small cut in TU. omg they took that out, gasp, small bit of blood and they panic like zebra's surroudned by lions! And ocne it was taken out Mihoshi says:

"OH Kiyone yuo're hurt!" then bandages her head later, AHA WHY? Stupid useless edits. Gah it makes me SO angry.

Seriously, it's no wnoder smoe people download the American versions. I'm in the UK, and they usually edit them far worse for us brits.

Adult Swim doesn't really edit our Animes. Samurai Champloo they edit for language like shit, and fuck (Omg, I said a bad word...... -_-Wink with turn table scratching, but I think that is the edited version of the series that comes with the boxed sets. I need to get those DVD's.

i feel the same exact way. i have experieced this when they took yu yu hakusho off adult swim, and put it on toonami for the younger audiences. one scene in the show, yusuke is suppose to beat his opponent from the light of a cigarette, but they edited it and he beats him by turning at the right moment and punching the guy in the face. I loved when they showed Yu Yu Hakusho for the first time on Adult Swim years ago. They left in everything, I do believe. I think that's Adult Swim's thing. They leave it unedited for the first time around, then when it comes time to show it again, if need be, they edit it to death. I refused to watch it after it came on in the afternoon block, just like I stopped Watching Wolf's Rain the second time around. To be fair though, I thought they would edit everything out of my favorite Yu Yu Hakusho episode and they actually barely touched it *grins*

It is good that they offer a mostly unedited version first, but I wish they wouldn't edit it for the second running.

I don't think the UK are more strictly censored than American ones on TV, I think they're about the same.

Also, people don't download the American ones because they're less censored, it's because they don't want to actually pay for the DVDs. I don't know of a single series which is still censored on DVD.

I've never known of any show with its music replaced, either. I suppose I don't actually watch much anime on tv though.
Hey, I can still..

DBZ is the most edited show i've ever seen. They put up weird bushes, strange blue clothing, and they serve root beer inside of bars. No that Cartoon Network is showing Dragonball Z (uncut) i'm finding out that it's actually longer than I thought. They took out about 80% of the first two episodes and slaped them together and who knows what else they've taken out. I even found out that they took an entire episode out of Outlaw Star, and Gundam: MS 8th team.

Indeed, DBZ is ridiculously edited.

- All the swearing taken out (I remember watching a subbed episode, the first thing Goku said was 'oh s***')
- In other translations, Kami (which means 'god') is referred to in the language itself. I learned this when playing Budokai 3 in French and Piccolo's Fusion with Kami was called Fusion avec Dieu (Dieu being French for god).
- HELL in the Japanese one was considered too offensive for broadcast. So they removed a couple of lines from the word, and voila! HFIL, which was explained away as standing for Home For Infinite Losers.
- Digitally removing a cigarette from a character's mouth, and the whole root beer thing.

It's not as bad on DVDs, but to watch it as it was intended (i.e. not as a kid's show) you have to watch subbed Japanese episodes, unless you speak fluent Japanese of course Wink
