It's still a surprise when it happens randomly. You can take every possible precaution, but still lose items to a random FSOD. Also, suggesting that people should be responsible for their own hacker-induced FSODs is very insulting; it's like saying a kid who fell down a hole shouldn't be saved from it just because he shouldn't have been playing around the hole. A lot of people, particularly new people don't even know to stay away from the unusually crowded US block (currently Altair 8), and go there simply because it seems popular. They're newbies, yes, but you can't expect them to be punished for naivete. FSOD is never anyone's fault except the FSODer, in the cases where an FSODer applies.
And I carry seven weapons on each character, thank you very much. I'll take my variety. This game gets very monotonous, IMO, when you use only one or two weapons. I don't usually carry two of the same type of weapon; rather, I usually carry 7 different types of weapon (reliable melee, gun, style melee, multi-hit melee, a couple others... that's the basic hunter set I use, for example). There's no reason not to; the answer to "why" is simply "why not?". I don't usually pick up items besides grinders, mats and the occasional PD or rare, and I usually have at least 7 or 8 spots in my item pack for this stuff.
So no, no one's forcing me to carry all my rares around. I carry them by choice, and I back them up by choice so I won't have to waste unnecessary time and wear on my memory card by depositing them after the game and taking them out again.
